Ziehl-Abegg's ZAdynpro: Great Performance, Space-Saving Design

Ziehl-Abegg (Germany) – The ZAdynpro frequency inverter from Ziehl-Abegg enables elevator system switch cabinets to be designed as compact units that make efficient use of space.

The construction of elevators today is based on new concepts for advanced systems. The result: less space for technical components and more room for passengers. Components that were previously installed in the shaft now have to be located elsewhere. To this end, Ziehl-Abegg has developed a new frequency inverter which allows for the design of elevator switch cabinets that make effective use of space.

The ZAdynpro frequency inverter from Ziehl-Abegg will be on show from the 17th – 20th October at Interlift in Augsburg (Hall 1 Stand 1126).

As a result of very compact elevator shaft heads and pits, there is increasingly less space available for technical components in the elevator shaft itself. These now have to be installed elsewhere, for example in the elevator switch cabinet but here again, the space available is limited. The ZAdynpro frequency inverter from Ziehl-Abegg takes account of this trend. Thanks to its compact size it provides for the design of very small switch cabinets for elevator systems, with or without machine room, making efficient use of space.

Individual switch cabinet solutions:
The switch cabinet has to satisfy demanding requirements, particularly in the case of elevator systems without a machine room because these are often installed on one of the floors in the building. In this context, the horizontal installation of the ZAdynpro and an external power choke offer the opportunity for customising the switch cabinet to meet the on-site conditions.

Ordering, storage, commissioning - total simplicity:
All interfaces for connecting elevator control unit and encoder are already integrated into the ZAdynpro. This does away with the tiresome and time-consuming selection of optional interface cards during the order process. By using one and the same unit to operate synchronous and asynchronous motors there’s nothing to prevent stocks of the product being held in the warehouse. The motor type is selected on-site during the commissioning.

The ZAdynpro runs synchronous and asynchronous motors 4.6 kW to 14.0 kW output range, with Ziehl-Abegg’s tried and tested operational reliability.

Like all devices in ZAdyn range, the ZAdynpro is a frequency inverter which has been one explicitly developed for use in elevators. This is reflected in the extremely clear and simple menu structure of the ZApadpro control panel. The result: ease of use and simple commissioning.

Quiet and functional:
Safe Torque Off (STO), the integrated safety function in accordance with IEC 61800-5-2 (SIL 3), meets the requirements of EN 81-20. Because the motor contactors create no switching noise, the switch cabinet, including ZAdynpro, can also be positioned on floors in buildings which are extremely sensitive to noise.

The elevator can be operated for evacuation purposes thanks to the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) 1 ~ 230 VAC and battery-powered energy supply.

The ZAdynpro software includes monitoring functions in accordance with the Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU:

  • Meter for change in direction of travel on elevators with synthetic material-coated ropes or belts
  • Motor brake self-monitoring as an element to prevent accidental movement of the elevator cabin
  • Motor brake self-monitoring as part of the safety system to prevent the cabin travelling upwards at excess speed

In addition, when using synchronous motors, key data can be secured in the motor’s absolute value encoder. This can prove to be a valuable backup at a later stage.

Think ecologically – Reduce energy costs:
An elevator stands still for hours every day. This downtime time offers a number of ways to save energy. By activating a digital input, the ZAdynpro can be set to standby mode. This reduces the energy consumption by up to 75%. The ZAdynpro is ready for use again immediately as required.

For installations which are in more frequent use, ZArec4C type energy recovery units offer the option of recovering the energy which is produced during a regenerative journey.

EMC compliance:
On completion, an integrated grid filter is immediately fitted to the ZAdynpro. So, in combination with the perfectly tuned external power choke, this meets all the requirements of the EMC standards specific to elevators, i.e. EN 12015 and EN 12016.

The ZAdynpro is an important component in the realisation of a compact switch cabinet. In combination with other components, such as for example the ZAsbc4 electronic brake control or the ZArec4C power supply unit, the ZAdynpro offers the opportunity to create an extremely quiet elevator with a long service life.

About Ziehl-Abegg:
Ziehl-Abegg (Kuenzelsau, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) is one of the leading global companies in the field of ventilation, control and drive technology. Back in the Fifties, Ziehl-Abegg established the basis for modern fan drives: external rotor motors which even today are still seen as state-of-the-art worldwide. Another area of business is electric motors which provide the power, for example, for elevators, medical applications (computer tomography equipment) or deep-sea underwater vehicles. The theme of electro-mobility for motor vehicles was established as part of the Ziehl-Abegg Automotive Team in 2012.

The high-tech company has an impressive innovative capability. Ziehl-Abegg employs more than 2,000 personnel in its production plants in Southern Germany. The company has a global workforce of 3,700 spread between 16 production plants, 27 companies and 97 sales locations. The products, approx. 30,000 in all, are sold in more than 100 countries. Turnover in 2016 totalled 484 million euros, with exports accounting for three quarters of the figure.

Emil Ziehl founded the company in Berlin in 1910 as a manufacturer of electric motors. After the Second World War the company’s headquarters were relocated to Southern Germany. Ziehl-Abegg SE is not a listed company but instead is family-owned.
